Top 3 Companies at CES

There were some incredible showcases at CES 2016, but here are three notable companies that pushed the boundaries of User Interface, utilizing sensing and/or computer vision to track, read and analyze human users:

1. ZeroUI. ZeroUI isn’t just a clever name. This small company is preparing to launch its first Kickstarter campaign, and its first product is a modular robotics kit controlled via smart glove. ZeroUI is tightly connected with Purdue engineering and computer science and is pursuing algorithm development and machine learning to enable gesture recognition through its wearable devices. It’s also actively pursuing thinner, lightweight wearables. We see richer and more nuanced devices on the way from this group. http://www.ziro.io/

2. 3DRudder. At first glance, 3DRudder seemed like just another start-up peddling the latest gimmick. It is a footpad that allows users to navigate space in a virtual environment by applying pressure to the balls and heels of their feet. In the end, we were surprised by the fluidity of the experience; it was truly compelling and incredibly easy to learn. It’s the closest thing to Peter Pan we’ve ever felt! Whether developers and users will jump on board is another matter. https://www.3drudder.com/

3. Intel. Intel has been a big player in this space for many years. Their flagship product, RealSense, is a hardware platform and SDK that incorporates RGB cameras, depth sensors and audio sensors. Originally produced to detect faces and speech, the platform has been extended into many other domains. Intel has put the hardware in multimedia displays to sense presence, on tangible interfaces to track physical forms and even on drones to autonomously navigate space. It seems their goal is to make RealSense a ubiquitous sensor platform, powering a wide range of products and devices. http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/architecture-and-technology/realsense-overview.html
