Use the 3dRudder to freely move and free up your hands for action
Dead Effect 2 VR is an efficient wave shooter game that can be played for hours in a row. An advice to all VR games addicts: if you’re looking for a way to move wherever you want to in the game AND keep your hands focused on action: try it with the 3dRudder. Walk, run, rotate while firing your guns, and bring the game up to the next level!
Without the 3dRudder
Dead Effect 2 VR is an upgrade of the well-known Dead Effect 2 (previously a ‘traditional PC game’). If you haven’t heard of it before, it belongs to the wave shooter game category. I can hear you think: OK, another wave shooter in VR, so what? Well, to start with, it has all the ingredients of a good recipe: (1) you are on your own and THEY (whomever they are) want you dead, (2) they sent fierce fighters to terminate you and the situation looks desperate, (3) you have superpowers and specific skills others don’t, and YES you can make it. On top of the classical gameplay, we have to say the story, graphics and well-thought features make it worth the investment. But being 3dRudder, guess what we did? Of course, we tried the game with the 3dRudder as a motion controller (instead of using the trackpads)
With the 3dRudder
We tested Dead Effect 2 VR with the 3dRudder as a motion controller instead of using the trackpads of the hands controllers for locomotion or blink teleportation. As a reminder, the 3dRudder is a foot-operated controller, meaning you control motion with your feet on the board: when you want to run, you tilt the 3dRudder forward full force, when you want to turn around (yes, the 3dRudder enables rotation) you just need to rotate the 3dRudder, and so on. In doing so, you free up your hands for interaction, grabbing guns and firing. It’s definitely easier to fire and keep moving at the same time when you combine actions from hands and feet as you do in real life. You’ll just do more!
How to set it up?
Playing with an HTC Vive: in the 3dRudder’s dashboard, select “Dead Effect 2 VR” in the games tab, click ‘Activate game settings’ and then launch the game.
Playing with an Oculus Rift: download the 3dRudder’s ‘VR Unleashed mode’ for the Oculus (watch the tutorial here). Launch the game on your computer and click ‘Activate’ in the ‘VR Unleashed mode’ window.
Put your VR headset on. The 3dRudder is now ready to move you wherever you want to.
