Enjoy free locomotion with the 3dRudder
The studio behind Steamhammer VR, Showstorm Ltd, describes it as "a story-driven virtual reality steampunk game". Graphics are pleasant to watch with a very enjoyable end-of-19th-century atmosphere, into which you can freely wander, while comfortably seated. Yes, Steamhammer VR offers native support of the 3dRudder motion controller.
Without the 3dRudder
Steamhammer VR was developed by a crazy bunch of guys at Showstorm, who felt energised to do "a story-driven virtual reality steampunk game". Steamhammer VR is compatible with all major VR HMD's (Oculus, Vive, Windows Mixed Reality) and is available on Steam VR. The game was originally designed to be played at room-scale, which can be quite an issue when you don't have enough space at home (well, who has enough?) and also because the game calls for a lot moving. After players asked them to, they eventually introduced free locomotion and integrated the 3dRudder as a VR motion controller.
With the 3dRudder
Let's listen to what the developers of the game have to say. When Showstorm released the free locomotion version of Steamhammer they teased players stating "if you played SteamHammerVR before, then you simply have not played it at all". But they still were in this VR-should-be-played-standing approach, until they tested the 3dRudder and loved so much how great playing seated could feel, they decided to integrate the 3dRudder as a VR motion controller, saying "it really is a fun and different experience playing SteamHammerVR with the 3dRudder even compared to our standard free movement system. We love it!".
How to set it up?
Steamhammer VR: the Rogue Apprentice natively supports the 3dRudder. Once the 3dRudder is plugged in your computer, it is automatically enabled as a motion controller in the game, and you don't need to go through the 3dRudder Dashboard. Note that hand controllers remain active for all hand-driven tasks.
Playing with HTC Vive, Oculus Rift or Windows Mixed Reality HMD's:
- Launch Steamhammer VR via Steam VR. Accept installation of updates to make sure you have the latest version of the game.
- Put your feet on the 3dRudder, stay still for half a second until you hear the calibration Beep, and start tilting the 3dRudder the way you want to go to in the game.
